主角宁采臣（張國榮）發展，故事發生于一個奸臣當道，朝政混亂，民生困苦的時代，宁采臣与專斬妖除魔的好友燕赤霞（午馬）分手路經一個半荒棄的市場，無辜被牽連入獄。幸在獄中通天博學士諸葛臥龍（谷峰）相助逃獄，逃獄后与年青鬼馬道士知狄（張學友）纏上，從誤會以至相交，一起投宿于一荒廢山庄。山庄中陰森恐布，隱藏著一只巨尸，然巨尸未現，兩人已先与一班鬼大打起來。經一番解釋，始知這班鬼皆為人扮，盡是忠義之士。

在傅青風（王祖賢）及其妹妹傅月池（李嘉欣）的帶領下，埋伏山庄，拯救被陷害入獄，被押上京受審的父親－兵都尚書傅天仇（劉兆銘）眾人誤認宁為諸葛臥龍前輩而尊敬有嘉。宁無從解釋之際，又覺青風貌似舊愛小倩，以為其為小倩投胎，遂將錯就錯，留不以便試探真假。山庄中，巨尸突然出現，知秋救宁出險境，并斬巨尸成半截，然巨尸上半身為患人間。遂追逐巨尸而去。宁無奈，留在山庄，与壯士商討營救傅天仇之計划。
 

Once again, Leslie, playing Lin, and Wong Tsu Hsien, playing Ching Fung, star in this romantic ghost film. Lin meets a young and witty Taoist Chin Chau (Jacky Cheung) and they become good friends. They run into some people who pretend to be ghosts.

These people are actually trying to save the innocent Fu (Lau Siu Ming) from imprisonment. Fu has two daughters, Ching Fung and Yuet Chi (Michelle Ries) who both fall in love with Lin. Fu tries to ask the emperor's right-hand man, Liu Suen, for help but Liu turns out to be a goblin. Lin, Chi Chau and the two sisters all team up to fight against the evil force in order to help Fu.
