背景於20世紀的三、四十年代，上海灘風雲動蕩，幾位性格、身份不同之年輕人，他們的經歷和情感糾葛與大時代命運息息相關。章子怡在片中扮演一位臥底交際花，是一民間抗日組織 - 紫蝴蝶的特派員，她曾是日本特務員的初戀情人，也和紫蝴蝶的首領有著曖昧的關係。一次槍戰中，劉燁扮演的平凡百姓被誤認為是紫補蝶所雇用來暗殺日軍將領的殺手，導致劉燁的未婚妻在槍戰中皮章子怡所誤殺身亡。愛情、國家、復仇之心，全糾葛在一起，亂世下的英雄兒女在太時代裡展開。
