Spring River Flows East -
part I (2001) 一江春水向東流 上 Director: Cai Chusheng, Zheng Junli Starring: Bai Yang, Tao Jin, Wu Yin, Shu Xiuwen Set during and after the war, this is a story that plugs the heartstring with tear-jerking drama while also serving its moral duty by offering pointed social criticism. The result is a powerful, sweeping 3 hour magnum opus so popular with the audience that it gave rise to a "romantic family epic" craze in the 1940's. This epic, considered China's equivalent of "Gone With The Wind", was the most significant of all the film of the late 1940s. The two part film tells the melodramatic story of a family during and after the War of Resistance Against Japan. Sufen, a textile worker, and Chong Zhongliang, an idealist school teacher, fall in love and marry in the course of their war work. Later, Chong leaves his family for Chongching city, where he becomes the lover of fashionable hostess. Meanwhile, Sufen, along with her son and mother-in-law, waits patiently for news of Chong, never giving up despite their miserable circumstances. The story reaches a tragic climax when Sufen discover that the husband of the woman she has been working for as a maid is in fact her own husband .... DVD: List Price: US $25.95
